COR Certification Guidance

As experienced occupational health and safety consultants and certified auditors, we specialize in guiding companies through the process of attaining a Certificate of Recognition (COR) in Alberta. A COR is awarded to employers who develop and implement an effective health and safety management system (HSMS) that meets provincial standards, demonstrating a commitment to workplace safety.

Our process typically consists of:

1.) Gap Analysis & Pre-Assessment

  • Conduct a thorough review of your existing health and safety policies, procedures, and programs
  • Identify areas that require improvement to meet COR standards
  • Provide a detailed action plan to close compliance gaps

2.) Development & Implementation of HSMS

  • Assist in creating and updating safety manuals, policies, and procedures
  • Develop hazard assessments, safe work practices, and emergency response plans
  • Ensure alignment with the requirements of your certifying partner (e.g., MHSA, Energy Safety Canada, ACSA)

3.) Training & Employee Engagement

  • Provide training for management and employees on COR standards and workplace safety
  • Assist in developing and delivering safety meetings and toolbox talks
  • Implement strategies to enhance safety culture and worker participation

4.) External Audit Preparation

  • Train internal auditors or conduct a mock audit to assess readiness
  • Provide recommendations for corrective actions before the formal audit
  • Ensure compliance with the Partnerships in Injury Reduction (PIR) program

5.) Maintenance and Renewal Support

  • Assist in selecting a certified auditor for the external audit
  • Provide on-site or remote support during the audit process
  • Help address any corrective actions required for certification.
